Cover design for “How U.S. Policy Turned the Sonoran Desert Into a Graveyard for Migrants“ published in the New York Times Sunday Magazine on Aug. 18, 2020. By James Verini. Photography by Kevin Cooley.
James Verini examines the way that U.S. immigration policy has increasingly diverted migrants to the vast and unforgiving environment of southern Arizona, where slightly less than half of all migrant deaths occur. Most of those fatalities happen in the Sonoran Desert, where the cover photograph was taken. The image conveys the frightening vastness that individuals face when trying to make their way to the United States.
